ATTENTION TO DETAIL
We strive to make every candle to the highest possible quality. This means focusing on every detail to make candles that look, burn and smell truly wonderful. It took us eighteen months for our blenders to create our fragrances and hundreds of hours have been devoted to blending, pouring and testing, and for each size of candle the best balance of wax and fragrance distribution combined with the optimum thickness of different wicks have been selected to ensure a superior quality burn.
Based in Dublin since 1488, our candles are still hand-poured there today. We are committed to Irish manufacturing, and continuing our status as Ireland’s oldest company.
People are at the heart of what we do. We aim to uphold the highest ethical standards, and honour our relationships with customers, stockists and employees. Every aspect of our candles is given a touch of luxury, from the special beeswax blended in with our traditional mineral wax. We work hard on the details so that all you need to do is light the wick and enjoy.
We at Rathbornes are trying to do our bit by moving towards more sustainable ecofriendly raw materials. We are passionate to create a better world. We are huge supporters of the All Ireland Pollinator Plan and the National Biodiversity Plan - where local farmers, authorities, schools, gardeners and businesses just like ourselves, come together to try to create an Ireland where our bees can survive and thrive.
100% NATURAL WAX
We combine beeswax, rapeseed and coconut to produce a truly sustainable
100% natural wax while ensuring a clean, slow, perfect burn. Each of our waxes are eco-friendly and sourced from entirely natural processes with no issues with intensive farming or GMO’s.
Rapeseed is grown throughout the UK and Ireland therefore reducing the carbon footprint. We also use 100% natural cotton wicks.
All of our packaging is made using FSC Mix Paper/Card which means that the paper is made from a mix of FSC paper (paper from sustainable forests) recycled paper and/or controlled wood (material from acceptable sources that can be mixed with FSC certified material in products carrying the FSC Mix label).
Our glass is sprayed with water based paint suitable for recycling.
The packaging chips we use to keep your beautiful products safe in transit are made from corn starch and are 100% compostable.
OUR RATHBORNES' HISTORY
FOUNDED IN DUBLIN IN 1488, RATHBORNES IS THE WORLD'S OLDEST CANDLE COMPANY. FOR OVER 500 YEARS RATHBORNES CANDLES HAVE ILLUMINATED THE STREETS, HOMES, LIGHTHOUSES AND CHURCHES OF IRELAND, AND THE CANDLES WHICH WE PRODUCE TODAY ARE STILL HAND-CRAFTED WITH MANY OF THE SAME SKILLED METHODS WHICH WE HAVE USED SINCE THE FIFTEENTH CENTURY.
John G Rathborne established his candle company on Wynetavern Street, Dublin in 1488 after moving over from Chester, England to seek his fortune with an innovative new business. All of life's rituals were done by the soft glow of candlelight, and Rathborne's candles quickly became woven into the social fabric of the city. From the 1630s Rathbornes supplied Dublin with candlelight for its streets and lighthouses, creating a safer city for its residents and visiting merchants. Candles provided hope and safety from the storms which threatened sailors on the Dublin coastline.
INNOVATION AND TRADITION
We have been refining our candles throughout our history, and taking the best from centuries of experience. This included developing new formulations of wax, moving from animal tallow to develop a special blend of beeswax and stearin during the industrial revolution. This technical innovation gave a cleaner, slower-burning candle for everyone to enjoy, and we remained loyal to our traditional methods of craftsmanship, still hand-pouring our candles today.
THE BEYOND THE PALE COLLECTION
Today we no longer need candles to light our streets, but we choose them for our homes. The soft, wavering glow of candlelight provides the same comfort and romance as it has for centuries. Still based in the heart of Dublin, our candles, diffusers and bath and body products all celebrate our rich heritage and they mark the culmination of centuries of innovation. BOTANICAL BEE COLLECTION
The symbiotic relationship between bees and flowers developed over 100 million years ago. Over the centuries, flowers adapted their scents and colours to be more attractive to bees. Established in Dublin in 1488, we at Rathbornes candles are masters of long relationships. The botanical bee collection captures the complex scents of these flowers, producing a 100% natural candle which can positively impact our emotional and physical well-being, as well as that of the whole environment. We have carefully selected our bespoke blended oils to reduce stress and anxiety, promote sleep and relaxation, and improve mood'. See the collection here.
